Historic Ice Lake
The Ice Lake has been an integral part of the town of Buena Vista, Chaffee County and the surrounding community for many years. The Lake is called Ice Lake because of the millions of pounds of ice harvested from the Lake prior to refrigeration.

The Franklin Spring that feeds the Lake is actually a warm spring and keeps the Lake from freezing over completely in the winter.  The Franklin Spring is notable because it consistently releases several cubic feet of water per second out of the spill way at the far end of the Lake.
In the 1800’s through the early 1920’s the Lake was a major source of ice to keep lettuce and other vegetables cool on their way to Denver and Colorado Springs.  A log shoot was erected in the late 1800’s to transport ice to the town of Buena Vista and the railroad.  During that time the President of the United States was presented with a large trout from Ice Lake for his dinner.
“The old lodge on the lake was originally a stage coach stop and featured a large barn with huge pegged hand hewn beams.  The barn burned down in the mid 1960’s but the lodge is still in use and is one of the older historic buildings in the area.  The 5 bedroom 2 bath lodge has the original fireplace and safe and is located next to the springs or trough that keeps the lake full and the water crystal clear year around.”

Since then, the Ice Lake has been part of an exclusive fishing and hunting club where numerous celebrities have enjoyed the excellent fishing and hunting including Bobby Unser, Mario Andretti, Melvin Payne (president of National Geographic, 1971), Curt Gowdy, and, more recently, Lisa Banes (stage and screen star).  One of the current owners is a past pro football player who has enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends, John Elway, Rod Hebron (Olympic Skier) and Goose Gossage (Baseball Pitcher) at the Ice lake.

The owners look forward to the next chapter in the continuing history of this wonderful property!
